General information

Customs

The serious part of international travel is clearing customs. Learn exactly what you’ll need to do and what shouldn’t travel by visiting:

Duty Free

Duty Free shopping is the fun start of your international travel journey, but restrictions do apply.

Normal baggage allowances apply to your duty free purchases, and if applicable, excess baggage charges may apply. If your purchases go over the carry-on baggage limits, you’ll need to check-in your duty free shopping.

NOTE : International to international transit passengers may be subject to additional airport security screening at the point of transfer. All Duty Free Liquids, Aerosols and Gels may be confiscated if above maximum limitations and packing requirements. 

Travelling to:

United States of America

Duty Free limits:

Thailand

Prohibited Imports: There are restrictions on the import and export of illegal drugs and all firearms and ammunition. The export of archaeological items or anything with historical value, religious artefacts and images of the Buddha requires a certificate of authorisation from the Department of Fine Arts in Thailand. Radio transceiver equipment, plant and living materials, live animals or products, medicines and chemicals also require a permit from the relevant government agency.

Warning: Any drug-related offences are severely punished and may result in life imprisonment or even the death penalty.

Fiji

Duty Free limits:

Prohibited Imports: The import of vegetables, seeds, meat and dairy products requires a special permit from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forests. The import of firearms and weapons, dangerous drugs and related utensils, live animals, products manufactured from endangered species, and biological specimens is also restricted.

South Africa

Returning SA citizens or residents who have been on holiday abroad and foreign visitors to SA are entitled to bring goods including gifts and souvenirs into the country duty-free. The following may also be brought into the country duty-free.

Duty for additional goods, new or used, (excluding firearms) up to the value R12 000,00 will be charged at a flat rate of 20%. 

Personal effects, sporting and recreational equipment belonging to tourists, whether used or new, will be allowed into South Africa, free of customs duty and VAT, if imported as accompanied or unaccompanied passenger's baggage for own use during their stay. Tourists are advised to check before departure to South Africa, if the items they wish to take with them fall within this category.

  • Commodities and quantities specified as duty free allowances can change without prior notice.

The above concessions are also subject to the following conditions:

  • The goods imported must, with the exception of personal effects, sporting or recreational equipment which may also be imported as unaccompanied baggage, actually accompany the passenger on the same ship or aircraft or vehicle.
  • Goods carried on behalf of third parties are subject to full duty and production of an import permit at the time of importation.
  • The rebate of duty specified above shall not apply to firearms acquired abroad or at any duty-free shop and imported by residents of the Republic returning after an absence of less than 6 months.

Entering Australia
